Class Description
Join our 8-week Beginners Wheel Classes where you will learn the following: Items you will learn to make: - Straight-sided cylinders - Bowls - Plates (if time allows) Techniques you will learn: - Wedging clay using one of the 3 main methods - Centring clay on the wheel head - Opening and raising walls of a clay form - Attaching a bat to the wheel head - Turning the bottom of a form to create a foot - Glazing your finished pieces By the end of the term, you will be able to begin to raise cylinders to then make bowls and plates. You are welcome to stay in the beginners wheel class for several terms, enabling you to expand the size of your pieces. You will also have a few finished glazed items to take home. If you are joining as an intermediate level student, over the course of the class you'll have the opportunity to work with larger amounts of clay and create more complex forms. You'll also learn techniques for trimming, glazing, and decorating your pieces. By the end of the course, you'll be able to confidently create larger cylinders, bowls, and plates, experiment with slip decorating on greenware, and have a better understanding of glazes suitable for different clays. Items that students will learn to make: - Larger bowls, cylinders, and platters - Identical forms - Lids and galleries, small and large - Necks, spouts, and handles - Closed forms and combination forms - Chip and dip platters and cake plates - Teapots Techniques that will be covered: - Improving wedging skills - Throwing larger pieces of clay up to 2kg - Throwing agate-ware with coloured clay - Improving trimming skills - Using slips/underglazes with sgraffito techniques on greenware - Clay and glaze fits, and different temperatures - Wax resist and latex techniques - Glazing techniques with a focus on food safety in glazes. - Reduction and oxidation firing options - Critiques during a show and tell session on the last lesson of each term, covering any glazing issues and aesthetics of form, which is a helpful learning tool.

Full Refund: Granted if OPC cancels a course. Withdrawal Refunds: 80% refund for cancellations made more than 7 days before the class starts (20% retained for administrative costs). No refund if cancelled during the week before the class starts.
