Class Description

Back by popular demand. Last one for the year. Raku pottery is a low temperature (960’C) kiln firing that heats up faster than normal kiln firings. The pots are removed from the kiln while molten orange and placed in prepared containers of combustible materials. Your choice of glazes will determine the unique colours and surface decoration. Explore under-glaze decoration on greenware, bisque, then glaze with a clear crackle raku glaze. Raku is not food-safe nor water proof. Low firing raku glazes are not the same as ordinary glazes. Your pots must be made from white raku clay, which contains grog, and is able to withstand the thermal shock from hot kiln to combustible bins. Non raku clays may explode-coloured raku clays inhibit the glazes. (The glazes don’t show up very well) OPC has a smooth white raku clay which exhibited excellent firing results in the last raku day. No breakages or explosions. I shall guide you on your raku journey with a short introductory workshop with info hand-outs and glaze samples to safely prepare you before the raku day.
